TNT pounds Star, tightens hold of top spot

TNT KaTropa stayed on course to claiming playoffs top seeding after dumping out-of-it-all the Star Hotshots, 115-105, in the PBA Governors Cup at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Sunday night.
Befuddled by the Hotshots’ run-and-gun game early on, the Texters made the adjustments and turned things around in the second half on the way to their ninth win against a lone defeat.
A possible win by Barangay Ginebra versus Phoenix Fuel Wednesday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo will set the stage for a virtual playoff match for top honors in the elims between the Texters and the Gin Kings at the Alonte Sports Center in Binan, Laguna Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Hotshots, though out of playoff contention, waged a gallant effort but came up short, absorbing an eighth loss against two wins in the end.
They play their farewell game in the conference and in the season versus the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Friday also at MOA Arena.
After a shaky start, the Texters buckled down to work in the second half and overwhelmed the Hotshots with a massive attack.
Starters Jason Castro, Mychal Ammons and Troy Rosario delivered double-digit numbers and so did second stringers Larry Fonacier, Moala Tautuaa and Michael Madanly.
Castro and Fonacier shared scoring honors for the team with 21 each while Ammons had a double-double game with 14 markers and 17 boards for the Texters who charged strong from a five-point halftime en route to the 10-point triumph.
Fonacier went 8-of-11 from the field, including three treys for his highest output in a game this conference.
Also putting in at least 10 points are Madanly, Rosario and Tautuaa.
Joel Wright paced the losing team with 27 points and 17 rebounds.
Determined to run from the very beginning, the Hotshots enjoyed a 20-7 advantage on fastbreak points as they took the half at 55-50.
PJ Simon came out strong, scoring nine markers in the opening quarter.
Wright and Mark Pingris then took over in the second quarter and they had combined for 25 points and 14 rebounds by the half.
The scores:
TNT 115 – Fonacier 21, Castro 21, Tautuaa 16, Ammons 14, Rosario 10, Madanly 10, Williams 9, Rosales 7, Reyes 5, De Ocampo 2, Carey 0, Rosser 0.
STAR 105 – Wright 27, Simon 20, Pingris 17, Barroca 10, Maliksi 9, Garcia 8, Pascual 6, Reavis 4, Mallari 4, Brondial 0, Melton 0.
Quarterscores: 27-27, 50-55, 89-83, 115-105

B/R NBA 200: Ranking the Top Guards Heading into 2016-17

What does Stephen Curry have in store for 2016-17 as he attempts the encore to his sterling 2015-16 NBA campaign? Is it regression after reaching previously untouched three-point heights, providing an endless supply of records and eventually winning MVP honors unanimously for the first time in league history? Or, can he reach a heretofore unimaginable next level?
Of course, there are no guarantees he even remains atop the heap of elite guards. Chris PaulRussell WestbrookJames HardenDamian Lillard and others are all primed to mount impressive challenges to Curry's apparent throne. And that's saying nothing of the other young backcourt talents just waiting to break out.
We aren't projecting how well everyone will perform during the upcoming season, but where they are as 2016-17 gets underway. Thus, we use the end of last season as our starting point. Not every player starts out on level footing, either; The NBA 200 metric identifies those who performed best during the 2015-16 regular campaign*. Potential doesn't matter, and neither does reputation or playoff performance (too variable)—it's all about what happened this past regular season only.
In this edition, we're looking at point guards (PG), combo guards (CG) and shooting guards (SG). All positions are graded using the same criteria (rim protection was added into the equation for bigger positions), but the categories are weighted differently to reflect changing roles, with max scores in parentheses:
  • Scoring (20 for point guards, 23 for combo guards and 25 for shooting guards)
  • Non-Scoring Offense: Facilitating (20 for point guards, 15 for combo guards and 10 for shooting guards) and Off-Ball Offense (5 for point guards, 7 for combo guards and 10 for shooting guards)
  • Defense: On-Ball (20) and Off-Ball (20)
  • Rebounding (5)
  • Durability (10)
For a full explanation of how these scores were determined, go here. And do note these aren't your father's classifications: Players' spots were determined by how much time they spent at each position throughout the season, largely based on data from Basketball-Reference.com, and we're expanding the traditional five to include four combo positions.
In the case of ties, the order is subjectively determined by ranking the more coveted player in the higher spot. That was done by a voting committee comprised of myself, three B/R National NBA Featured Columnists (Grant HughesZach Buckley and Dan Favale) and B/R Associate NBA Editor (Joel Cordes).
There are 71 guards considered, so you can click "Next" to start the whole list or skip ahead to Guards 50-41 if you want.
Wings will be ranked on Tuesday, September 13, with Bigs coming Wednesday, September 14 and our total 200 ranking on Thursday, September 15.

Note: All statistics come from Basketball-Reference.com and NBA.com unless otherwise indicated. Injury information comes from Pro Sports Transactions. In order to qualify for the rankings, players must have suited up in at least 30 games and logged no fewer than 500 minutes. This intro was adapted from last year's edition.
A few players you might expect to see in this installment will be showing up elsewhere. They include Kobe Bryant (small forward), DeMar DeRozan (swingman), Evan Fournier (swingman), Klay Thompson (swingman) and others.
*Thus, a "retired-in-the-offseason" player like Tim Duncan or Kobe Bryant will still show up here as well. Even though they're (sadly) not playing again, they're a valuable placeholder that helps show where 2016-17's bunch stacks up in comparison at the start of the season.

Terrence Romeo Highlights Vs. France

2016 FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament: PHI vs FRA
Romeo was said to be the Allen Iverson of Asia. Do you agree? China fans? Romeo easily shaked our nation's best player. That's asia basketball lvl, however. When you facin' teams like France, you will need Blatche. Blatche is a very agile tall fat slightly athletic old ex-nba player drafted outta highschool. He could play around w/ them French non-nba players.
